Where It All Begins: Exploring the Merridale Orchard

Do you have a favourite Merridale product? Chances are, its key ingredients were grown or cultivated right here at the farm, where almost everything we produce starts in the orchard. We invite you to come for a self-guided stroll, where you can fully relax while enjoying the serene, natural setting. Start by picking up an orchard walk map from the Farmhouse tasting bar, which will help you to identify points of interest along the way.

Our heritage cider apple trees produce robust, tannic fruits that transform beautifully into crisp apple ciders, cider-based spirits like our apple cider brandy, chutneys and vinaigrettes. Our honey bees arrive each spring, and the apple blossom honey they produce is used in our Farmhouse Eatery, as well as our Cyser cider. During the spring and summer seasons, you’ll likely see honey bees buzzing about as you walk amongst the apple trees.

One thing you may not know about the Merridale orchard is that it is home to several friendly, magical creatures. Children will enjoy looking for the gnomes, dryads, hobgoblins and dwarves who have made their homes amongst the apple trees. While you may not catch a glimpse of the creatures themselves, you’ll certainly see evidence of them throughout your orchard walk!

This lovely stroll can be done in about 20 minutes, just enough time to feel the spring sunshine, enjoy the peace and quiet and start think about a refreshing beverage or a bite to eat. The orchard walk, like the rest of the Merridale property, is open to anyone and everyone. Whether you’re seeking faeries, taking photographs, or simply enjoying the peaceful setting, there’s something for everyone to love.

Back at the Farmhouse, taste some of the wonderful farm-to-fork options that are made from scratch and inspired by local, seasonal ingredients. We also make our own pickles, sauces, and dressings, and bake fresh bread every day using our own cider leaven. So tuck in and sip a glass of your favourite cider (each dish has a recommended cider pairing), or opt for a cider tasting flight. Kids can enjoy non-alcoholic flights, too!

After lunch, take a few minutes to browse the Farm Store, located in the Farmhouse adjacent to the tasting bar. Here you will find bottles of Merridale craft cider and spirits, Merridale merchandise, and our own house-made, artisanal pantry items like Cyser mustard, apple chutney, pickled peppers, and simple syrups. Essentially, everything you will need to make the perfect charcuterie board and craft cocktails at home. We also feature a host of interesting, hand-crafted goods by other local producers. So, pick out some cider or brandy, grab a few treats at the Farm Store, and bring the uniquely spirited craft of Merridale home with you.

Feel free to get in touch via phone or email, or reach out on social media if you have any questions about planning your visit to Merridale.
